After School Program
Jeanne Peraza – Program Manager
The Carousel After School Program has added some new Clubs for the students who are enrolled. These programs are designed to provide new opportunities for skill development and learning. Carousel teachers with experience in the particular area or After School Staff will be directing the Club meetings. Weekly activities are scheduled for each Club and are available to any student who is enrolled in the After School Program.
The following Clubs are going to be added:
- Art Club – Students will be given the opportunity to learn about several different mediums including pencil, charcoal, chalk, ink, crayon, watercolors, acrylics, clay, and others. Projects will be age appropriate and require thought and creativity on behalf of the students. Some meetings may include learning about art history or viewing works of famous artists.
- Dance Club – Dance Club will encourage creativity and help develop physical coordination for the students who participate in this club. Various genres will be covered including classical ballet, hip-hop, country/western, native, folk, interpretational, and others.
- Cooking Club – Students will learn the basics of cooking and baking through participation in a weekly project. Students may bring favorite recipes from home if they would like.
- Intramural Basketball Club – Basic basketball skills will be taught and worked on during this Club’s activity time. These skills will then be incorporated into the intramural games and team play that will take place.
- Intramural Soccer Club – Students will be taught basic soccer skills and play intramural games.
- Book Club – A book of the week will be read and discussed within the group. Students may bring favorite books from home or choose from a list of titles at the local or school library. Both fictional and non-fictional works will be included with a diverse range of subject matters.
- Computer Club – This club will teach basic computer skills and build on them using software and programs designed for our students. Students may bring PC-compatible software from home to share with the group if they wish.
- Music Appreciation Club – A variety of music, including classical, jazz, blues, folk, rock, pop, country/western, hip-hop, reggae, and other genres will be covered. Students are encouraged to bring their own favorite selections for listening and discussion. Music history and some basic theory may be covered as well.
- Health Club – Health lessons will focus on the advantages of good quality nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral health.
- Sign Language Club – Several, practical signs and phrases will be taught along with some signs which are specific to a certain topic or area of interest. After learning the signs, students will converse with each other in sign language regarding the topic at hand.
